Happy Friday everyone! Today on the blog we’ve got our youngest feature MyXXFLY babe to date, and she is most literally a babe. Meet 364 day old Hendrix Ivy! It seems like just yesterday that we were meeting Hendrix’ mom Linda for the first time on our blog, but even back then we knew Hendrix was destined for the spotlight.
¡Feliz Viernes a todos! Hoy nos acopmaña la modelo más joven en la historia de MyXXFLY, y ella es toda una muñeca. ¡Les presento a Hendrix Ivy, edad: 364 días! Parece que solo ayer conocimos a la madre de Hendrix, Linda, por primera vez en nuestro blog, pero hasta en ese entonces sabíamos que Hendrix estaba destinada a ser el centro de atención.
We set out on a gorgeous Miami winter day to Kendall Hammocks Park for a photo-shoot to commemorate baby Hendrix’ first year of life. With five wardrobe changes over the span of an afternoon, you might be thinking diva in the worst way, but in reality, baby Hendrix has a temperament that any zen Buddhist yogi can only aspire to. Changed, fed, changed again, and again, and again, and again; our girl was no muss, no fuss, straight chilling.

This day was exceptionally special for Hendrix Ivy because it was the first time she frolicked in the splendor of mother nature. So while you might be thinking she’s just a great model, the awe of the greenery and joy on her face as she explores the textures of the Earth are genuine as fuck.

The Future (El Futuro)
Now more than ever it is imperative that we, as adults, be more socially conscious and involved in the political process. With inexperienced over-privileged millionaires like Betsy Devos as Secretary of Education (who doesn’t have the faintest idea of what goes on in a school, especially a public one), and Scott Pruitt as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (who was appointed to fucking torpedo it) , the future of our children is in grave jeopardy.
Ahora más que nunca, es imperativo que nosotros, como adultos, tengamos una conciencia social y participemos en el proceso político. Con millonaria inexperta Betsy Devos como Secretaria de Educación (que no tiene ni idea de lo que ocurre en una escuela, especialmente una pública), y Scott Pruitt como administrador de la Agencia de Protección del Ambiente (cuya meta es destruir la misma Agencia), el futuro de nuestros hijos está en grave peligro.
The deregulation of the Department of Education may hurt the most vulnerable populations of American children, and leave the future stunted in its ability to think freely and critically. The American public is being led to believe that “voucher programs” (where parents choose to use public funds to send students to private/charter schools) are the answer to the education gap, when research has shown these programs are largely ineffective. With Devos and the current administrations creationist leanings, the “voucher” or “school choice” initiative is a cleverly disguised way of using taxpayer money to fund charter schools which may or may not comply with national standards of curriculum and the separation of church and state.
La desregulación del Departamento de Educación puede perjudicar a las poblaciones más vulnerables de los niños estadounidenses, y dejar al futuro atrofiado en su capacidad de pensar críticamente. While the future of education may be threatened, it may be inconsequential if the Environmental Protection Agency moves forward with the current administration’s goal to slash funding for clean air and water programs by 30 percent. Let’s be clear here. The government wants to deregulate the EPA; i.e. get rid of the rules put in place to keep your air and water clean in order to allow industry to flourish (so they won’t have to worry about what’s happening to the pesky environment). And not only slash funding, and deregulate, but also completely eliminate programs on climate change and environmental justice. These actions are the equivalent of blind-folding the public and dropping a brick on the gas pedal toward our devastation. With the sped up effects of global warming (especially in vulnerable regions like S. Florida), our children will inherit a pollution-riddled disaster of a country. What survives of it anyway.
Aunque el futuro de la educación se ve amenazada, puede ser insignificante si la Agencia de Protección del Ambiente avanza con recortar el financiamiento para programas de aire y agua limpia (por un 30 por ciento). The thing about the internet is any asshole with a computer can spout whatever bullshit they wish (present company included ;P). The danger however, is that it doesn’t have to be true for you to believe it. So change where your focus goes! Do you keep up to date with current events by using reliable media sources? If you don’t, it’s all good, I got you covered fam. With a simple Facebook post, you can find out where those you love and respect get their information from. I saw this on my own wall, and thought it was genius. Ask your friends this “Without fear of judgment, please comment below. Friends, where do you get your news?”

Go to the media outlet’s Facebook page, and from the drop-down menu under “Following”, change your news feed settings to “See First”. This will make important news front and center on your page. By doing this, you are giving politics a priority in your life. You are finding out what’s going on, from sources you trust, instead of scrolling through a multitude of selfies and personality polls until something catches your eye. We cannot pretend that what happens under the current administration doesn’t effect us, or our children, and while ignorance may be bliss, we cannot afford anymore of it in this day and age.

I am (in favor of/opposed to) ______. Thank you.” That’s all there is to it bruh.

Maybe the cynic in you is thinking “why am I going to waste my time, Marco Rubio’s going to do whatever the fuck he wants anyway.” Maybe so darling, but you sure can wear ‘im down. See, the beautiful thing about Democracy as it stands, is that power must be granted by the people, and what are politicians are terrified of? Losing reelections. Phone calls from constituents effect votes, especially if your representative is on the fence about a particular issue. The margins of a bill/resolution passing, can sometimes boil down to a handful of yay or nays. So if you feel strongly about something, call, and encourage those around you to call as well. Even if in the end things don’t go your way, don’t let up. What’s 3 minutes when you’re already stuck in traffic? What’s 3 minutes when your significant other is pumping gas and you’re chilling in your car scrolling through instagram? What’s 3 minutes as you wait in the lobby of wherever the fuck as they prepare your food? We are not powerless to stop that which must be stopped, we only have to be willing.

Mira, lo hermoso de la Democracia, es que el poder debe ser otorgado por el pueblo, y ¿de qué están aterrados los políticos? en perder reelecciones. Los márgenes por cual pasa una ley / resolución a veces son solo unos cuantos votos. Así que si usted quiere influir, llame, y anime a los que te rodean a llamar también. Incluso si al final las cosas no van a tu manera, no pierdas la fe. ¿Que son 3 minutos cuando ya estás atrapado en el tráfico? ¿Que son 3 minutos cuando solo estas comiendo mierda viendo fotos en Instagram? ¿Qué son 3 minutos cuando estas esperando que preparen tu comida para llevarlo a casa? No somos impotentes para detener lo que debe ser detenido, sólo tenemos que estar dispuestos.
Persepctive (Perspectiva)
As we grow from carefree children into (hopefully) responsible adults, it’s easy to forget the splendor of simply being alive. In movies about monsters, spirits, and creatures from other realms, the desire of these is often to just have a human experience. Think of Captain Barbosa in Pirates of the Caribbean who yearns to eat an apple, or to feel the warmth of another’s body. So as adult humans, with the capacity to live and breathe, we must remember to bask in these simple pleasures. But beyond that, we must remember that basic human rights are not always a given.
A medida que crecemos de niños despreocupados a adultos responsables, es fácil olvidar el esplendor de simplemente estar vivo. En las películas sobre monstruos, espíritus y criaturas de otras dimensiones, el deseo de estos suele ser simplemente tener una experiencia humana. Piense en el Capitán Barbosa en Piratas del Caribe que anhela comer una manzana, o sentir el calor de otro cuerpo. Así que, como seres humanos adultos, con la capacidad de vivir y respirar, debemos recordar que hay que disfrutar de estos placeres simples en vez de buscar la felicidad externamente. Pero más allá de eso, debemos recordar que los derechos humanos básicos no siempre son un hecho.
If we do not contest policies as they are being written, then we have already raised our hands up in defeat. The privileges we take for granted, will be stripped from us one by one if we do not protest. So for the sake of our lives, and the lives of our children we must continue to care about what our government does and more importantly, we must act. Our capacity to grow and explore does not diminish as we get older, in fact, the weight of our experiences enhance life’s new lessons, and within this synthesis, change occurs. It is up to us to make sure that the change which comes is favorable for all, not only for some.
Si no impugnamos las leyes dañinas que están siendo escritas, entonces ya hemos levantado nuestras manos en la derrota. Los privilegios que tenemos como ciudadanos, serán despojados uno por uno si no protestamos. We’d like to wish itty bitty future riot-grrl Hendrix Ivy an amazing first birthday, and vow to continue to fight for a future that will be worthy of her and all of our children. May Hendrix, and children like her, who experience joy by simply basking in the sun on an open meadow be reminders that living freely is all we really need. We must fight not only for this country’s future, and for the lives of our children, but for ourselves.
