Do Not Wear

Posted on

This week’s outfit is the pinnacle of everything a fat girl shouldn’t wear. Not in fashion, prints over your widest areas, form-fitting as fuck, and reminiscent of something you’d see in a Smash Mouth video. Funky printed button down, and lots of accent colors for your irises. I was feeling thoroughly uninspired with my own thrift pieces and took advantage of the fact that resident #MyXXFLY photographer has a closet which is exclusively thrifted or gifted. So I built a look around the hula-girl shirt and made sure to emphasize the belly. We’ve all got “problem areas” which are only “problems” if we believe they are. My belly is something I’m always cautious about showing despite the fact that no matter what I wear it’ll definitely be prominent, because hello, it’s a fat round belly. Instead of hiding, fighting, or pretending it isn’t there, sometimes it’s fun to give the VBL (visible belly line) its moment.

So the shoot started with the outfit and a plan, and ended with the outfit and a dead end. If you’re from South Florida you remember a time when Krome felt like the end of the world, and while it’s still the last long avenue before the Everglades, it’s not the dark two-lane highway in the boonies it once was. The #MyXXFLY team went in that direction to shoot at an abandoned graffiti covered building suited for the bold prints and colors of this look, only to find a pile of graffiti covered rubble. Construction in the area to expand Krome has left us with a more urbanized avenue and far less romantic landscapes, so we made our lemons into lemonade and braved the bugs and humidity at a dead end by the gun range.

VBL, insecurity, frustrations and dead ends. Whatever you wear or whatever venture you undertake; sometimes you’ll feel uninspired, sometimes your flaws will be made visible, many times your plans won’t work out as intended, but these seeming stressors may lead you to uncover your own #MyXXFLY. Next week we’ll travel the galaxy with Lady O, but for now? Might as well walk on the sun.
